    Terms of service

The short version: be decent to the people in your club, do not break the thing, and expect it to change while it is this new.

    Agreeing to these terms

Using Bookmark Society means accepting what is on this page. If you do not, do not use it. Where these terms and the privacy policy overlap, the privacy policy governs how we handle your information.

    Your account

You need an account, and accounts are let in gradually — by invitation from an existing member, or from the waitlist. One account per person, a real address you can receive email at, and you are responsible for what happens under it. Tell us if you think someone else has got into it.

You can delete your account whenever you like. We can close an account that is being used to harass people, to break the service, or to get around the limits below.

    What you post

Your writing stays yours. You give us only what is needed to run the service: to store what you post and show it to the other members of the clubs you put it in. We do not claim ownership of it and we do not license it to anyone else.

Do not post things that are not yours to post, and specifically not:

    • material you do not have the rights to — including pirated books or scanned copies
    • harassment, threats, or abuse aimed at anyone
    • anything illegal, or anything sexual involving minors
    • spam, scams, or advertising dressed up as a discussion
    • other people's private information

We can remove content that breaks the above, and we can do it without notice.

Clubs are run by the people who create them

Whoever creates a club decides what it reads, who is in it, and who is removed from it. That is the product working as designed, and it means the club owner — not us — sets the tone of the group. Content you post to a club is visible to its members, and it disappears if the owner deletes the club or their account.

We do not moderate individual clubs and we do not read private discussions looking for problems. Report anything serious to support@bookmarksociety.com.

    Fair use of the service

There are caps on how much one account can create — clubs, members, invitations and library size — so that the cost of running this stays predictable while it is small. They are set well above ordinary use and can move. Do not try to work around them, scrape the site, or automate it.

    Book information

Book titles, authors, covers and other details come from an external catalogue and are sometimes wrong or match the wrong edition. You can correct a match on a book; we do not warrant that any of it is accurate.

    This is early software

The service is provided as is. There is no uptime guarantee, no promise that any particular feature will keep existing, and no guarantee against data loss — keep your own copy of anything you would be upset to lose. To the fullest extent the law allows, we are not liable for losses arising from using it, and nothing here limits liability that cannot legally be limited.

It is free at the moment. If that ever changes, existing accounts will be told before it does.

    Changes

These terms can change. Material changes get a note here and a new date at the bottom of the page; continuing to use the service after that means accepting them. Questions go to support@bookmarksociety.com.
